Flying

The Asia Pacific Publishing Convention loved the rundown I sent them for my talk in August. So much so, they’ve invited me to chair a plenary session. I was very flattered – until I read what they wanted me to talk on.
Here’s what the organiser, Abby Bacani, wrote.
“Good news! The program committee feels that you should be speaking at a plenary, so we are inviting you to speak in one of the plenary sessions (in addition to your Special Interest Session on Basics of Effective Writing.
“We are suggesting that your topic be: “Understanding the new realities of metrics, audience measurement and research in the digital era.” And we are planning to have Anita Matthews, formerly from Star Publications, as your co-panelist. A moderator will be appointed and briefed shortly.”
She adds that it would be really nice if I could use the session to reveal some original research on the subject.
Well, I’d love to. Except I have no idea what the realities of metrics are. I know as much about the subject as I do about early Byzantine art. Probably less.
Like most journos, my initial reaction was: “I wonder if I could wing it.” But commonsense prevailed. I wouldn’t have a prayer.
Still, every cloud… Riva, being a qualitative market researcher, knows about this stuff. I’ve volunteered her.
She’s furious because she thought she’d spend much of the conference shopping in Kuala Lumpur. Not any more, buster.
